Bird flu awareness radio drama

Funder: US Embassy
Period: 2009

Bird flu is a serious problem in Indonesia, the virus strikes without warning and affects people from all walks of life. OTMI produced a five-episode radio drama series to educate and inform people about bird flu, which was broadcast as part of a US Embassy funded project.

Our objectives

1. Produce a radio drama and contents for a kit to help radio stations conduct a public awareness campaign.
2. Distribute the drama radio series and kit to community radio stations.
3. Monitor the broadcasting of the drama radio series and PSA.

What we did
We wrote and produced a five-part radio drama series designed to encourage people to take precautions to protect against bird and swine flues. Each episode included key messages and warning about how they are spread and what can be done to safeguard against them.

We then distributed the drama to community radio stations with supporting material, including information encouraging stations to help play their part and instructions on how to conduct the campaign.

What we achieved
  • The radio drama was broadcast on 67 community radio stations in East Java, West Java, West Nusa Tenggara, North Sumatra, Banten and Bali, the worst hit and most vulnerable areas of Indonesia.
  • Each community radio station broadcast the series more than twice.
  • 1,164 public service announcements were broadcast.
  • More than $100,000 worth of free air-time was donated.
